Plant early in spring --
the brains you harvested last year, wintered in a cool, dry place, set them in the soil, eyes up return their gaze, cover, hill them with mulch, wait. Roots fan out, muscle the earth searching; they read buried arrow heads that point to buried pasts waiting yet to flower. Shoots push into moonlight, punch through asphalt and concrete. Towers of green explode upward lifting cars into the canopy, held there like antique Christmas tree ornaments. Citizens of this pollen-nation swing through the vines like apiaries. There will be weeds, invasive species non-native plants, nuts -- let them be, they all have their place. Do pull the poets and the politicians up by their roots. They will scream such rich fertilizer -- In this forest city we are all gardeners -- our hands mason jars our mouths spigots our feet cultivators our hearts humus. Go now, the harvest is heavy, the work is love. |
